Ever since humans have inhabited the earth, they have made use of various forms of communication. Generally, this expression of thoughts and feelings has been in the form of oral speech. When there is a language barrier, communication is accomplished through sign language in which motions stand for letters, words, and ideas. Tourists, the deaf, and the mute symbols of whole words are very picturesque and exact, and can be used internationally; spelling, however, cannot.

Body language transmits ideas or thoughts by certain actions, either intentionally or unintentionally. A wink can be a way of flirting or indicating that the party is only joking. A nod signifies approval, while shaking the head indicates a negative reaction.

Other form of non linguistic language can be found in Braille (a system of raised dots read with the fingertips), signal flags, Morse code, and smoke signals. Road maps of a picture signs also guide, warn, and instruct people. While verbalization is the most common form of language, other system, and techniques also express human thoughts and feeling.

The early work on human communication theory began with a focus on language, and on how language is used to generate meaning; meaning is believed to be engendered by the words themselves. The first serious work in this field appeared in the early 1900s with the development of the field of Semiotics.

Ferdinand de Saussure, a French linguist working in the early 1900s, was one of the first to develop a semiotic theory. Working in the same domain and at much the same time was Charles Sanders Peirce, an American philosopher/logician, who developed models that were related to, but somewhat different from those of Saussure.

Saussure developed the idea that a language is a system of signs, where words are used to signify objects. The language itself is an abstract system, which can exist independently from real-life objects. It is through the spoken or written word (Saussure used parole) that language systems are applied to real-life situations. Saussure argued that no actual link exists between the sign and the object; rather it is an interpretative or arbitrary link. Saussure also argued that words (or signs) in a language become connected into large communicative units, such as sentences and paragraphs, according to relations between the words. The way that this is done is determined by a “sign system”, or set of grammatical rules.

Advertising is a message industry that plays a major role in shaping the content and operation of the mass media. Although advertising has existed since ancient times, mass advertising as we know it today began growing up with the mass media in the late nineteenth century. Getting a person to buy a product is not an easy job. The complexities of advertising are in the selling process which covers three main stages. Those are awareness, trial, and reinforcement.

Awareness is the easiest step of all. Consumers can be made aware that a product exists through repetition and other advertising techniques. If the advertiser makes the bigger advertising campaign, they will be more aware of the product. Cutting the advertisement budget will likely reduce sales because some reinforcement will be lost.

Trial is the second step which is much more difficult to induce. Merely advertising a product is not necessarily going to make someone try it. As a result, many companies use other techniques to get people to try the product, including sending free samples through the mail or giving them out in stores, giving away discount coupons and offering price reduction.

Reinforcement is the necessary third step to get users to buy the product again. Studies have shown that after people try a new brand, they usually go back to their regular brand unless they are constantly reminded about the new brand by effective advertising. Of course, the new brand must be comparable in quality to the old brand. If the product does not please the customers, they will probably never purchase it again.

After doing all steps, advertisers use sales records as indicators to know whether they will need to increase advertising or not. If sales go up, so does the amount spent on advertising.

Human beings recognize patterns of information and organize them to generate meaning. Collections of these organized patterns form the languages that humans use when they communicate. We use certain "signs" among ourselves that do not point to anything in our actual surroundings. Instead of announcers of things, they are reminders ... they take the place of things that we have perceived in the past, or even things that we can merely imagine by combining memories, things that might be in the past or future experience. They serve to let us develop a characteristic attitude toward objectsin absentia, which is called "thinking of" or "referring to" what is not here.

Human beings possess the ability to notice patterns in their environments. When the perception of these patterns leads to the interpretation of new information in the context of previous knowledge, we might say that meaning occurs. The notion of meaning, or the making sense out of one's information, is an important aspect of human communication.

There is not a little agreement as to how the term "meaning" should be defined, nor is there agreement as to how meaning is created, preserved and destroyed in the midst of the communication process. However, attempts to reconcile these disagreements have led to the development of a number of differing points-of-view.

Such a statement as "The word 'cat' stand for a certain small mammal" is not either true or false. Its truth depends upon agreement between the speakers that it be true. In terms of such agreement they understand each other; or where disagreement occurs they will meet with misunderstanding. A sign is a pattern of data which, when perceived, brings to mind something other than itself. Although this definition appears simple on the surface, it has complex implications.

This situation illustrates the three fundamental building blocks which, together with the rules that describe how they relate to one another, will be used to construct the Semiotic Model of Communication.
